When is it right to deliver Gender Specific Youth Work?

 

In this episode of Youth Work Toolbox, we explore gender specific youth work, and when is it right to exclude young people of the opposite sex.

As a youth worker, the time will come when you will have to work with specific gender groups.

From our experience, much of the youth provision across the UK, specifically centre based are male focused and/or male dominated.

It just seems easier as they can be easier to cater to young men than young women.

Young men will participate in certain activities that young women won’t – and the opposite is also true.

Mixed gender at the youth centre defines the norms and expectations about male and female behaviour and the interaction between sexes.

But, on occasions, you can make some real significant progress working with single sex group.
